Waiter, There's a Worm in my Tequila

There's one thing that puzzles me about my recent trip to Arizona. As Kerry and I were leaving the Botanical Gardens, we went out by way of the gift shop, and I saw a display of tequila-flavored suckers that proudly announced that they each contained a real worm. I picked one up, and sure enough, there was a real worm in it. A little crispy, as I imagine is only natural because the sucker liquid is boiling hot when it's poured into molds, but a real worm nonetheless. I said to an employee standing nearby, "Why is there a real worm in here? Do these actually sell?"

"My grandson loves them," she replied. "He says it tastes like chicken."

I just don't understand. I really don't.

I also don't understand why the Salt Lake Airport gift shop sells stationery made from recycled elephant poo. Why poo? Why elephants? Why is there no recycled water buffalo paper? And who in their right mind would send a letter written on recylced poo? Probably the same person who would sit and eat a tequila-flavored sucker with a worm in it while writing the letter.

You have me rolling! This is a hilarious post, Tristi.

It's best to just not ASK. I don't understand either!

Yuck!

If the paper manufacturers need any more poo - I have a yard full of dog poo they can have!

Ohhh boy...now that is a strange collection of trivia. Elephant poo??? Never heard of that one. I believe the sucker bit, strange though it is. My hubby brought home ones that were flavored like hot peppers...ugh. Who would want to suck on that??? Life is a strange world...grin.

I remember seeing these little statues made out of poo--at the airport. Can't remember what kind of poo... I think people just sort of go nuts from being cooped up on planes and are sitting ducks for weird stuff.

in the drinking world, tequilla has traditionally come with a worm in it. THere are many ideas behind it. some say the worm provides mescal and makes the tequilla stronger, others (quite understandably) feel the worm has soaked up all the alcohol and if you eat the worm you are a hairy chested man. The alcohol in the worm is loaded with what makes you loaded. I understand they have stopped exporting tequilla with worms in it, something about health issues. as far as why someone would make a tequilla flavored sucker is beyond me except the rising generation hasn't given up there suckers.

I don't have a clue about the elephants and what they have to do with Utah.

Maybe the same person who buys the sucker wraps it in the elephant poo paper to send to a friend. Two cool gifts in one.

I think the poo paper trumps the sucker.... but.... er..... I think my tum is flipping now for sure.

Tristi, you are a hoot :-) Maybe we should grow worms for our food storage. I didn't know they were even edible. So what's in a worm? Anyone know?

As a Boy Scout, we camped down on the beach in Mexico a couple of summers. On one excursion we were visiting Ensenada and my friend and I were gallivanting around town looking for things to interest us. We stood outside of Hussong's Cantina for a few moments wondering if we could sneek into their bar (just to see what it looked like). As we stood at the doorway, some guy probably about 16 years old, staggers out, looks at my friend and belches right in his face and then staggers away laughing. Well, that was enough for us, we now had to go in and see it for ourselves.

Anyway, from these trips I learned about the worm at the bottom of a tequila bottle. It's sort of a test of manhood to eat the worm. Of course, you're typically pretty drunk before doing so, which probably helps it go down. (honestly, I don't know, never having tried it myself).

I can't imagine eating one in a sucker while perfectly sober.

Am I the only person concerned about the fact that she's giving a kid a tequila flavored sucker? I guess it could have been an adult grandson...let's hope.

Elephant poo? Wow. Why not cow poo, it seems like there would be more of it available and recycling cow poo may cut down on the greenhouse gasses caused by eating red meat. I just read on another blog today that eating a cow steak is harder on the environment than eating 8 whale steaks.

You know, Jen, I did think about that whole grandson getting hooked on tequila thing, but only after the shock of the worm had worn off. :)

Dan and Keith, since I don't have to prove what a real man I am, I think I'll leave that little ol' worm in the tequila where he belongs.

Where's the ASPCA when you need them?

The paper actually helps in a couple of ways, it's 'green', good for the environment and helps elephant welfare and conservation programs. Elephant dung is highly fibrous, nothing like dog poo. And not a tree was cut down.

No way! Recycled Elephant POO???? Firstly, how on earth do they even do that and secondly....EW.

The worm thing made me want to gag. Gross. =Þ
