This Time, On Purpose

You may recall our sunflower adventure from last summer, when my husband spilled some seeds outside and we grew a little impromptu sunflower forest right in the middle of our yard. We really enjoyed the resulting brightness but not so much the highly random placement. This year, we decided to be more pro-active in our sowing and he placed the seeds neatly around the edges of the lawn. It looks a lot more orderly now, which appeals to my need for organization.

Here are some pictures:

In my opinion, these really are the ideal flowers for a yard. They require very little care, do quite well on whatever water they get, and they create a visual impact with just one or two blooms. Plus, they make me happy.

they are very beatiful. i remember growing a single giant sunflower when i was a kid. i planted the seed in the middle of my dad's garden without him knowing. Course, when it's head was resting over my neighbor's fence, i think he noticed :P When it turned to seed, i have it to my bird.

Your last sentence says it all. Good for you.

I've been nursing a few pablano pepper plants for a couple of months now, that I'm hoping will eventually produce Chile Rellenos. I've had lots of buds, but no peppers yet. But they make me happy.

They're lovely! Sunflowers are my favourite flower and I have vases of silk ones all over my house.

Sunflowers are one of my favorites, second only to StarGazer lillies. Love the pictures, and I can't wait to have a yard of my own to plant some in!

Fun pics. I love giant sunflowers. I have some pics of me in my mom's garden senior year, trying to reach the sunflower above me and I'm 5 foot 7. Flowers make me happy too. :)

We spilled lots of birdseed too early in the season, and now we have a flower bed full of sunflowers. It is one of my favorite flowers, and my daughter's too.

Sunflowers are resilient, there's no doubt about that! My 3rd grader had a desire to grow some sunflowers last year and she started them in paper cups. First, she put some dirt in the bottom of the cup, put the seed in, and then put enough water in there to keep it all floating for a few days. After that, she forgot to water it until the dirt was hard-packed and cracked for a few days. Nonetheless, we have sunflowers out front now that are taller than my kids!
