Conversation with Son During Primary
My five-year-old has a hard time sitting still during Primary opening exercises, so I sit with him. Today he caught sight of the picture of Jesus's baptism on the wall and turned to me.
"Mom, I want to get baptized."
"You do?"
"Yes."
"Okay, how old do you have to be?"
He thought for a minute. "I want to be as old as (his big brother) was. How old was he?"
"He was eight."
"Okay, I want to be eight." He pointed to the picture on the wall. "I want to be just like Jesus and get baptized."
Of course, my heart got all warm and fuzzy. We don't push the concept of baptism on our children, hoping they will gain that desire on their own, and because of the joy my membership in the Church has brought me, I'm delighted when they decide it for themselves. My moment of spiritual uplift was slightly shattered, however, as my son continued to study the picture, and then uttered in a too-loud-for-Primary voice:
"JESUS was BAPTIZED OUTSIDE????"

Hee hee hee... too precious. Still giggling...
I'm the chorister for our Jr. Primary. Those kids never cease to amaze me with their comments. They have an insight that is so refreshing. They are so pure!
Love it! Today, in JR Primary, the sister giving the sharing time lesson used baby food and a picture to illustrate the way sins soil us. All the kids reacted to the baby food, calling it gross, etc. The sister shushed them, "You all at baby food when you were little." To which one of our more outspoken 6/7 yr olds responded, "Not me! I grew up too fast!"
We're the same way--we don't push baptism on our kids but we're glad when they chose too. (And I always thought it would be cool to be baptized outside too!)
My son's birthday places him with a December baptism, so an indoor font rocks. :) A river is rather picturesque, though.
I love the innocence of children!
We also don't push baptism on our kids. Our second son was baptized last month, he is 18 months younger than his brother. At his brother's baptism was upset that he couldn't be baptized as well. The kind bishop took him aside and talked to him about it, and our son couldn't wait. He didn't even want to postpone it when grandparents couldn't come so we didn't.
I love how it finally sunk in...lol Kids have the most wonderful thoughts. Our Gospel Doctrine teacher was just barely called from the primary, and he said he was mad...he'd just adjusted to learning the songs and gotten the hang of things. Now he had to teach adults...ugh. grin.
What a cutie!
So cute! What a precious moment. Makes me think about my kids when they were young. :)
One of my investigators while I was on my mission was determined to be baptised outside - just like Jesus. Only downside? January - in Wyoming! I have delightful pictures of us all out in a foot of snow!
Funny! You should submit that to Cindy & Nichole for their Mormon Mishaps vol. 2.
I love special moments like these! It melts my heart as a mom.
That's great. I hope you found him stories about pioneers that had to chop ice to get to the water!
