When in Doubt, Get Gout

First of all, I have to say, I'm virulently opposed to the word "gout." Doesn't it just sound awful? Like some sort of horribly communicative disease that should require the sufferer to go live in a leper colony or something? Let's call it something nicer, like, "painful disease caused by build-up of uric acid, generally caused by repetitive movement." Doesn't that have a nicer ring to it?

Second, this is what I think of when I hear the word "gout."He's actually a pretty adorable little old man-but that's my point. He's a little old man, and I consider myself to be a young(ish) woman. Young women just shouldn't get little old men's diseases, should they?

It all started two weeks ago when I threw a bone out in my big toe. After an adjustment, it was still sore, but then I developed gout symptoms. Well, this morning I woke up with bones out in my left foot. I've just come back from the doctor, and we're trying to resolve upon a game plan.

1. Cherry juice, alfalfa, and flax seed oil.

2. Eating more healthy foods.

3. And for the bones, a connective tissue supplement.

I guess this is what happens when you go for thirty-three years without making yourself the priority. I've always been so busy with home, family, and work (or hobbies) that my health has been ignored. You know, the consequences can be pretty darned painful ...

Ouch! This does not sound like fun. Hope that nasty condition-which-must-not-be-named clears up soon!

Ugh! I'm so sorry.

A friend of mine was told years ago when he had a blood test for a physical that he had a "susceptibility" to gout in the future and to drink lots of water & lay off the sweets. We share a joke about it every once in a while, because it seems like such an unusual diagnosis anymore.

I hope you get some relief!

Take care of yourself. You're worth it. And we want to have you around for a long time.

Oh NO! I hope you get better soon! That sounds awful. Makes for a funny blog post though....

Ouch! Take care of you. I know we hear it all the time, but you can't take care of everyone else if you're out of commission. Doesn't stop us from trying...sigh. Get better :)

My BIL has gout and I know it gets terribly painful for him. I'm sorry to hear about the painful stuff. Don't forget to take care of you. This brilliant person I know once told me that mom's should be like fountains, not puddles. ;)

You're so much more organized than I am - I don't go for diagnosable 'conditions'. When I feel the need for pain, I just fall off of something. Quick and easy, that's my route!

I've decided that just about anything unpleasant can be turned into a funny blog post if you try hard enough. :)

Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone - I'm hanging in there but feeling really annoyed with life in general and physical bodies in particular. :)

I certainly hope you get to feeling better.

In my house, whenever somebody is hurting or feeling crummy we say, "I guess we'll have to amputate."

I wouldn't recommend that, however. It doesn't work for me either because in my case such a treatment plan would be permanent and catastrophic. Amputation would have to be done at the neck.

Get well soon!

I've heard that gout can be so painful. I'm sorry you have to suffer with this! We all need to take better care of ourselves, not that some conditions can be prevented, but it doesn't matter, our health can't be ignored.

Feel better.

Hope it heals soon.

Flax seed is our friend, we toss it (ground flax seed meal) into pancakes, waffles, muffins, you name it. Kids don't even know it's there, but I do.

Good reminder about keeping our bodies healthy & as whole as possible.

My brother has gout attacks and really suffers when it hits. All I remember is he eats blueberries, and avoids cranberries and red meat. Sounds like you and your doctor have a good game plan. Take care.

People who get gout can also get the uric acid kidney stones—which are horrible (personal experience). And they can't blast them into bits like they do the calcium stones. So in addition to the other stuff, DRINK LOTS OF WATER!

I'm sorry to hear about your gout, but I'm glad you are feeling better. (I read ahead to the next blog.) good luck in the challenge.

I JUST got diagnosed with this and refuse to say the word out loud. In fact, I wrote an article about it and someone sent me here for support. I'll be your crutch if you'll be mine.
