Say It Isn't So!

On a regular day, fixing my hair is a quick little routine that usually involves a hair clip and a brush. If I'm going somewhere, I'll put in a little more effort, but yesterday was a quiet day, a hair-in-the-clip sort of day. If only I had known what was to await me . . .

As usual, I brushed my hair. As usual, I gathered up the front and sides, twisted them and pinned them in place with a clip. And there it was. Right in front.

My first white hair.

I looked at it very carefully. No, it wasn't a blonde highlight -- it was much too light. I yanked it out and held it to the light. Then to my bedroom light. Then to the sunlight. No matter how I looked at it, the hair was white.

You might say, "Oh, it was just a matter of time." Hello? I'm 32! I wasn't expecting this for ten more years!

I saved the hair and tucked it into my glasses case. I showed it to my husband. He was no help -- he went gray at 17.

At least I have two consolations. First is that my hair was a pretty, snowy white, not a yellow-white or a mucky gray. Second, I live close to Wal-mart and hair coloring is very inexpensive these days . . .

Oh Tristi, my young friend, enjoy your youth and do not stress. Think positively. I'm sure it was a simple fluke of nature.

Yes, mine began at 21 on my mission!! That was 11 years ago. So you know where I'm at now. I've been buying hair color now for a few years. sniff sniff. It's so depressing!

Just a trick of light, Tristi. :-)

I want to offer sympathy and congrats at the same time. So glad it's a lovely white...I hope I go white when the time comes.

If it's any consolation, I had a white hair grow out of my eyebrow when I was thirteen and haven't had another since. Could be an abberation!

I used to worry about my hair. However, since I started shaving my head, every day is a good hair day... ;-)

I'm the oldest of my siblings and the last to get gray hair. I remember the day I found the first one--I proudly showed it off to my children. I felt I'd earned it! I still don't have many gray hairs, but I color my hair for the fun of it. :)

I'm the same age as you, Tristi, and I've been finding those stray gray hairs for quite a few years now. I keep finding more and more of them, but you know what? In the grand scheme of things, you can't even see them if you're not up close. It'll be a while before you even need hair coloring.

But, here's a tip I learned that's served me well the last year or so: Don't dye your hair - just have a few highlights put in. The stray grays will just read as one of the highlighted hairs.

Oh yeah - I'm right there with you, Tristi. Except I got my first gray hair in high school. Since then, I've randomly picked them out. But recently they've started multiplying. And believe me, I'm not the "growing-old-gracefully" type. Nope. I'll meet you in the Revlon-aisle, girlfriend!

I got my first gray hair at 28 during my divorce. My advice is to wait quite a while before coloring. Once you start, you have to keep it up. I go every five to six weeks to color my roots. Of course, I have a lot more than one gray hair now.
I don't know why you can't email me. Did you try my hotmail address? That worked before. If not, leave your adress in a comment, and I'll email you.

Tristi,
I'm sure it was just some stray mutant ray of sunlight that attacked your hair! You're in your prime, don't worry--unless you see another. :)

I got my first white hair at 27. I think it was the stress of moving across the country and becoming a stay at home mom all at the same time. I guess these things are bound to happen in time.

Welcome to the club, Tristi. Don't worry, we don't have to start buying red hats just yet.

Welcome to the color club. You can blame your kids and husband for that pre-mature gray hair.

It couldn't be your age! No way. I'm older than you, and I have no intention of going gray for at least twenty or thirty years.

Welcome to the club. I have yucky gray, not snowy white, and it showed up in abundance when I was 28 or so. Salt and pepper, heavy on the salt. I started coloring at 30, and there's really no going back now. Thank goodness for cheap hair color! (and coupons to boot!)
