Preorder "Season of Sacrifice," Get Free Shipping!

The year is 1879. President John Taylor of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has asked his intrepid members living in southwest Utah to travel across the state and set up a colony in southeast Utah. One hundred and eighty wagons are prepared and head out in October, the people sure that they'll arrive by Christmas. They didn't know what dangers they would face, from a passage through rock that seemed impossible, to the threat of starvation. Six weeks stretched into six months. Babies were born on the trail. Faith was tested but did not falter, and at last the group straggled in, their wagons tested to the limits, their horses on the brink of death.

This is the story of the Hole-in-the-Rock pioneers. I am descended from Benjamin Perkins, one of the most notable of these. He engineered the passage down the hole you see in the picture, giving the wagons a safe way down to the Colorado River. "Season of Sacrifice" is Ben's story, taken from family history books, texts written on the subject, and Ben's own life story. Written like a novel, yet historically accurate in every regard, you'll not only learn about this historic feat of courage and daring, but you'll feel what the pioneers felt and rejoice at their success.

This book will be available mid-to-late March. If you would like to preorder a copy, leave your name in the comment trail along with how many copies you would like. I will pay the shipping on every copy you purchase. I don't know the purchase price yet -- that will be determined within the next few weeks. I'll contact you and let you know.

This is my third published novel, and my favorite to date. I've loved every minute I spent writing this book and I feel sure you will enjoy it. The free shipping special ends at midnight, February 25th.

I want one. I'm 60% sure one of my relatives participated in this mission. 60%. How's that for ambivilence?

Do you use real names? If so, I'll find out one way or another.

Marsha, I use real names and I have a listing of every person who participated in the trek. What was your relative's name and I'll look it up.

And thanks for preordering!

This sounds like a great book. Maybe if I save my pennies between now and then I can afford it. :)

Put me down for one, too! Years ago, I traveled to Hole-in-the-rock by jeep trail and we camped on the opposite side of the lake. It was awesome, waking up in the morning and seeing that great crevice in the morning light. I remember one section of the trail -- the chute -- that was so intimidating. I can't believe they took wagons up that thing.

I've been to Lake Powell a number of times since then, and one of my favorite spots is Hole-in-the-Rock. What a story!

And the bonus is that I get to meet you {even before I'd hoped for the LDSstorymakers} and attending one of your lectures. YIPEEE!

I'd love to buy one. It sounds so interesting, especially the boat tour down the Colorado that I took while visiting Moab.

This book sounds totally fab and right up my alley. Only problem is $$$ and reading time! My TBR pile is soooooo tall now, I can't remember all I have stacked there! Gauging by your profile info, you and I share some favorite movies, too. :^) Ever seen "Emma" with Gwyneth Paltrow?

Based on the photo you provided pertaining to your book, I can't imagine anyone navigating wagons through that hole-in-the-wall terrain! You've also made me contemplate my heritage, story-wise that is. Great-great-great+++++ uncle (John Howland) came to America on the Mayflower in 1620. His claim to fame is that he's known for being swept overboard in a storm and rescued by grabbing onto a rope. That story's already been written. Also of note, apparently Joseph Smith is one of his descendents, too!

My direct lineage, however, is through John Howland's brother (Henry). His crossing to America in 1823/4 was not quite as notable. Oh well. lol I'm definitely noting your blog and written works for future purchase delights! :^) (sorry for rambling so long!) TTFN
