Musings on a Chilly Morning

I haven't had enough sleep in a couple of days -- Candace and I set up for the Chocolate Show today and I've been up until all hours making product. I think that's the only thing wrong with handmade items -- they have to be made by hand.

I used to do any number of things by hand. I crocheted, I tatted, I did cross-stitch, I even tried my hand at knitting (although all I ever accomplished there was a scarf -- I can't do anything fancy). But that was BK -- Before Kids.

With every pregnancy, my patience drained out. Now I have four kids and no patience. One would hope that one's patience would increase as one had children -- well, I don't know who one is but one certainly isn't me. I can't sit down and spend hours creating things now. If I don't see results immediately, I'm out of there. My scrapbook pages are done in less than one minute or I won't do them. None of those twenty-minute layouts for me, thanks!

But where did my patience go? Certainly not into my children -- they're just as impatient as I am. I think it must have all just seeped out from my feet into the floor. I'd sure like to have it back.

I also feel I have a finite amount of patience. That's why I quit teaching piano actually, I was wasting all my patience on other people's kids and my kids got me back when I was totally drained.

I have a lot more patience with kiddos than I do with grown ups though.

If you find it, I'd like some too ;)

Patience? What is that?

I had exactly the same knitting experience as you did. I even still have the one black scarf that I knitted. I do crochet, and my mother-in-law has promised to teach me how to tat. From what you've said, I guess I'd better hurry and learn BEFORE we have kids.

Each of my children drained about 9 months worth of patience out of me. My husband has used up the rest. :)

How cool that you tat. I know so few people who know how. I also tat, cross stitch, crochet, etc...but knitting makes me crazy. I've only managed to finish one thing and it took me forever. I hardly do any of those things anymore, but I miss them and figure it is a case of a time and a season. Someday I will be able to pick them up again. (I say with fingers crossed.) I use those things as therapy to keep me from going completely loony.

Tristi,
I keep trying to get onto your challenges blog, but I can't seem to access it. What is going on?

Thank you! Thank you! I don't have to feel guilty for not making afghans and cross-stitching beautiful pictures and sewing quilts... Okay I still feel guilty because I also used to do tons of that and have several unfinished projects right now. I think that with each kid you have about 1/2 as much free time as you used too. So because I have 2 I don't have any free time and because you have a ton more than that, you're really not all that impatient right? You just don't have the same amount of free time :)
On another note, I found one of your comments waiting to be moderated within my blog, instead of my email. I don't know why, but I'm sorry I missed it at first. It's up now. :)

Children don't inherit patience - they burn through it like a stack of gas-soaked rejection letters.

The fact is, you have a much greater capacity for patience now thanks to your kids. The trick is getting them to stop using it up faster than you can replenish it.

LOL, too bad it just seeped into the floor. Maybe it's going into a patience bank or something? It'll be there for you when you really need it, like being saved up for a rainy day. That's better than just seeping into the floor like an oil spill or something. Ha!

I still have patience, but not for the same things I once did. I never had patience for detailed crochet patterns BK, but now I love 'em. However I used to love to scrapbook and now I can't stand it! Go figure.

I hope the Chocolate Show goes great! I have to go look and see if you posted more info on this. I have no idea what it is :)

I've not only lost my patience but I've lost my mind and energy also. When I was 20ish, I knew it all, I could do it all, and I had the time and patience to figure it all out. Now I'm pretty much...good for nothing! I sorta work on autopilot now. No thinking, just get it done and move on to the next task. Anything beyond my daily routine begins to overwhelm me. It's a little scarey because I have way too many little people counting on me to have it all together. Good luck on your show. You always have some type of project going on. You are very inspiring!
