Announcing Merrill Osmond's New Book: Faith, Hope, and Gravity!

Merrill Osmond announces the release of his new book, Faith, Hope, and Gravity, co-authored with Shirley Bahlmann.

About the book:  “Faith, Hope and Gravity” is the spiritual, magical adventure of teenage Liam Kane as he discovers some of the same lessons Merrill Osmond learned as the world-traveling lead singer of the Osmond Brothers. Like Merrill, Liam is often misunderstood as he helps those seeking for purpose in their extraordinary talents. Liam’s visionary abilities gain him international notoriety as “The Prophecy Boy” who swims with dolphins, dreams of a mysterious red door, and champions those who are often misjudged for their uncommon gifts. Surviving kidnapping, near-drowning, and imprisonment leads to the discovery that despite differences, when people respect each other and their wide variety of abilities, the thread of commonality that runs through mankind grows ever stronger.

Merrill and Shirley are throwing a party to celebrate, and you can join in! Head over here and like the page, then head back here and tell me why you'd like to receive a free copy of Merrill's Broadway album.

The winner will be chosen randomly from all those who comment on this blog, stating they have "liked" the page.

Now, another treat - Merrill has answered some interview questions for us, and here they are!

What were some of the books you read as a child and how have they influenced you?

I used to read Robin Hood over and over. I couldn't quite understand how someone could steal and be praised for it. I didn't understand who the good guy was in the end. I observed a lot of lies, a lot of deceit and justification to try to get the poor the goods they needed. I also saw how those who sat around and did nothing always seemed to get fed and taken care of, too. But the most interesting thread that wrapped everything into my head was the guy at the top, the king, the so called God that ruled and reigned over all the good and the bad. That individual became my life’s study. With the power to do as he pleased, why did any of this good/bad stuff have to happen at all? Was there not enough of everything to go around? Couldn't he have talked to the people and asked what the needs were, then tried to do something about it?

My childhood stories were not just read in books, but watching many people as a child I would make up the funniest books anyone could have written.

What is one memory you have of your earliest experiences with music?

I can remember way back when we started. I was only four and my father would drive us around to fairs and different gatherings that we would sing at. But I would have to say my most vivid memories are when we started on the Andy Williams show. We were supposed to do one show with Andy and it turned in to six years. It was a live show and that’s where we got the nickname of “One Take Osmonds.” Each week we would have to come up with a new routine to stay fresh and so we would learn to play an instrument one week, ice skate, tap dance, you name it, we had to do it. But we had the best production behind us and we learned to get it right. You don’t want to mess up live on TV. It also put a lot of pressure on us as young children if you think about our age and the pressure we were under to be perfect each time. But it made us who were are today and still performing together over 50 years.

Can you share a little about writing Faith, Hope & Gravity and your road to publication?

Well…”Faith, Hope and Gravity” has been in my head for a long time, more years than I care to say.  It’s so much a part of me that many people have a hard time understanding sometimes about my deep thoughts and the way I look at the world. I thought that maybe this book would use the stories in a way that people would get to know who I am and ask, “Is this really fiction, or is this Merrill Osmond?” As you read the book, you will see pieces of my thought process and how I viewed the world.

Guest Blog: Paul Rimmasch about The Lost Stones

I never set out to write a book. In fact, if my beloved high school English teacher has heard that I have, he probably choked on his stale teachers’ room coffee. My problem was, I had a story in my head; it was a story that so occupied my thoughts that I figured the only way to get rid of it was to write it down. I did and it worked.  The Lost Stones is out of my head and on paper.

Writing may have started out as a cathartic exercise for me, but it ended up opening up a whole new world. I never knew there so many people who wanted to write a book before I wrote one myself.  As I talked and gave encouragement to aspiring authors, I began to wonder why people didn’t end up accomplishing their goal. Why had I succeeded where others had failed?

I came to the conclusion that I was just dense enough not to know that people like me didn’t write books. So many would-be writers listen to the doubts of their friends and family and, worse yet, the nagging fears in their own minds. A lack of faith kills more stories that all of the acquisition editors in the world combined.

Finding faith is one of the main themes in The Lost Stones. My main character, Ammon Rogers, loses his faith in God as a teenager. During his service during the Iraq war, he feels a yearning to find it again.  As he endeavors to do this, Ammon discovers the continual conflict between proof and faith.  Conventional wisdom says that faith follows proof.  Wisdom of a more ancient variety says that proof follows faith.

As Ammon traverses the pages of The Lost Stones, he finds that the latter is true.  Anyone trying to write must find this out as well. I truly believe that many people are waiting for some sort of proof that they can write a book before they start. It doesn’t work that way. One has to have the faith first, ignore all of the naysayers and work your tail off.  The proof comes when you take your finished manuscript out of the hole-puncher and slap it into a three ring binder. There is no other way.

I guess when it comes right down to it, Ammon and I made a similar journey.  Won’t you join us?

Paul Rimmasch was born and reared in the Salt Lake Valley. He graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminalistics and a minor in Photography. Paul has spent the last fourteen years working as a Crime Scene Investigator for Weber-Metro CSI and is active in  Forensic Science education and Law Enforcement training. He lives in Ogden, Utah, with his wife and three children and is an avid hiker and gardener. Paul has parlayed a life-long interest in Book of Mormon archaeology and LDS Church history into this, his first novel.

My Personal Experiences at LDSBA

Thanks for joining me for this three-part series about LDSBA. To learn more about the LDSBA and to see what I got to do on Thursday this last week, click here.  To see what I did on Friday, click here.

This year, I attended LDSBA in three capacities. I was there as a blogger (see two previous posts), I was there as a reviewer for the AML (stay tuned for book reviews), and I was there as an author. I'd now like to share with you some highlights from my week that pertain to my author life.

The first thing I did when I reached the convention was to check in with my publisher and let them know I was there. I was really happy (okay, yes, I did squeal and jump up and down) when I saw that my book cover had been chosen to be the featured poster at the booth, all lit up from behind and everything. That pretty much made the weekend for me.

One of my favorite things about LDSBA is the chance it gives me to see my friends. L-R: author Andrea Pearson, me, Kathy Gordon of Covenant Communications, author Traci Hunter Abramson, and author Julie Wright. Some of the best ladies on the planet.

I got to meet artist James Christensen - a huge thrill for me. I forget exactly what he was saying when this picture was taken, but he kept making me laugh the whole time we were talking. He signed this print just for me.

I also got to see my good friend Josi Kilpack, who was celebrating another great book release.

And I got to meet Richard Paul Evans. That was very fun. It was made even more fun when I was able to take his new book home to my son, who is a huge fan.

I also got to meet Kathy, one of my favorite bloggers, after years of knowing her online.

Then I did my signing for Turning Pages, my latest novel. I had a great time telling people about it, and of course, showing off my light-up poster.

I shared my signing with author Jenni James, and we had a lot of fun!

I always have such a great time at LDSBA, and I can't wait for next year!

My Friday at LDSBA

To read about my first day at the Latter-day Saint Booksellers Association Convention, click here.

I was really excited to get back to the convention on Friday. I'd had such a great time on Thursday, and I couldn't wait to go meet more amazing booth vendors.

This is the booth belonging to Johnson Brothers. They specialize in ties, but they also carry tie tacks and other items along those lines. As you look at the right side of the display, those ties are in the fashion line. The ties on the left are the LDS line. Their LDS ties are designed with subtle patterns that are suitable to wear to work, and yet if you look closely, you'll see a Captain Moroni, or temple spires, or other similar themes.

Yes, I pretty much squealed when I saw this in the back of the Johnson Brothers' booth. This is a white shirt for a baby, but it's also a onesie, so it will stay tucked in. I wish I'd had one of these when I was dressing my little boys for church ... it would have made things so much easier.  Check out the Johnson Brothers website here.

This is the ShirleyJ booth, manned by my good friend Georgia Carpenter. ShirleyJ creates amazing food products that will revolutionize how you cook and make your life easier. One product, Whisk Bliss, mixes up to make a creamy base for all your soups and sauces while containing less sodium than your canned cream soups, and it's less expensive. Check out their website here - their product line is amazing.

This is the RLegacy Entertainment booth. This exciting new company has produced records by William Joseph, Katherine Nelson, Daniel Beck, and distributes for Janice Kapp Perry, the Nashville Tribute Band, Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band, and many more.

I spoke with Gaylen Rust, president of the company, and he shared some of the company's goals with me. They are looking forward to becoming a one-stop shopping place for quality LDS music, not only through their productions, but through YourLDSRadio, which they also own. I had the chance to listen to one of their CDs by William Joseph yesterday, and it was absolutely beautiful. Visit the RLegacy website here.

This is the Archive Publishers booth. They reprint books that are no longer available, some of the great LDS classics that should never have faded into the background. They also publish new books, including those by author Kelly Gneiting (pictured above, right). Kelly is a champion sumo wrestler (hence why he's wearing his bathrobe) and he holds the world record for being the heaviest man ever to finish a marathon. In addition to the LDS books Kelly has authored, he will soon be releasing his story. I had a great talk with both these gentlemen and I'm very impressed by their product line. You can learn more about Archive Publishers here.

This fun booth belonged to Finch Family Games. They make handouts, file folder games, handouts, clip art - just about anything you can imagine. Check them out here.

There you have it - my Friday at LDSBA!  I wish I'd been able to meet all the vendors, but there were over 70 of them, and it would have been impossible. I'd like to thank all those who took the time to speak with me and share a bit about their products, and I encourage you all to visit the links, learn about the products, and look for them when you visit your bookstore.

I'd also like to thank the folks who run the LDSBA for being so committed to what they do. They bring vendors and manufacturers together and give them a place to discuss the needs of the LDS market so that we, as consumers, can always find the products we want. It's a great organization, and I'm so glad I got to give you all this behind-the-scenes look so you can look forward to another great year of LDS products in your stores.

My Thursday at LDSBA

I've had a really fun opportunity this year as I've attended LDSBA, which stands for the Latter-day Saint Booksellers Association and is a trade show held yearly in Salt Lake City where publishers and stores can display their products to stores that carry LDS merchandise. I've participated at this conference nine out of the last ten years as an author, but this year, I was invited by the LDSBA to attend as a blogger and post my thoughts and experiences related to event.

First of all, I have to say how much I love attending this conference. It's a gathering of people who all have the same goal - to get high-quality merchandise to the customers who need it. There's a feeling of teamwork and friendship like you don't find in other venues.

Before we head into my pictorial journey, let me take a second to explain that this convention is not open to the public, so I'm not trying to get you to come next year.  :) I'm showing you the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to bring you the merchandise that shows up in your favorite LDS bookstore. A lot of time, planning, and effort goes into it, and it's awesome to see all the new merchandise on display and to know that those things will soon be on store shelves for everyone to see.

Here are the pictures of the booths I visited on Thursday. They each took a moment to share with me what makes their products special.

Here's an example of what the convention looks like. The publishers and other exhibitors have booths they decorate in any way that fits their business model, and they put their newest products on display.
Look at all the great artwork on display - LDS merchandise is so wide and varied.

This booth belongs to DownEast Basics, a company that makes modest clothing.
Their fashions are sold in many of the LDS bookstores and in all the major malls. You can visit their website here.

As an example of how cute their clothing is, here my friend Andrea Pearson shows off one
of their cute lace tops, perfect for layering.

Covenant Communications is one of the largest publishers in the LDS marketplace.
They feature both fiction and nonfiction titles, and have given us some of the best
LDS authors out there. You can learn more about them at their website, or visit any Seagull Book
and Tape store. Kathy Gordon of Covenant told me that their fall line-up this year is one of the finest they've ever had.

I am very familiar with Brigham Distributing's booth. They are the distributors for
Walnut Springs, my publisher, (check them out! They're awesome!) so I'm good friends with all of them and I've signed there several times in the past. Brigham is run by some of the best people in the business, and I love working for them. They're some of the people responsible
for getting books into the stores. You can visit them here

My good friend Angie Lofthouse signing at Brigham's booth. She also publishes
with Walnut Springs.

Another author friend, Chrisy Ross.

My good friend Jeff Lambson runs the business Scripture Stickers. They specialize in removable, transparent stickers you can place over your favorite verses. You can check out their full product line here.

Mikarose specializes in beautiful dresses that are also modest. It was fun to look at their styles - their clothing really is so pretty, they have sizes up to 2XL, and they're affordable, too. Check out their website to see what I mean.

This booth belongs to Cherished Moments, a company that manufactures jewelry for special occasions. Some of their bestsellers are tiny little bracelets for baby blessings, and beautiful necklaces for baptisms. Each piece is so lovely, and they are manufactured in the USA. Visit their website here.

Muggli Graphics is run by Glorianne Muggli, who has served in Primary for over 35 years and knows the ins and outs of the program and what teachers most need. She has created a fantastic line of printouts and lesson supplements for every aspect of Primary. I was amazed at all the word strips, lesson ideas, song teaching materials ... basically, if you're in the Primary, you need to check out this website.

This is the display set up by Cedar Fort, one of the largest publishers in the LDS market. Those squares up on the wall are all e-readers featuring different Cedar Fort titles.

Ringmasters is the largest manufacturer of LDS jewelry in existence, and they've been in business for twenty-five years. This picture shows some of the LDS-themed necklaces they offer, but they also make rings in all styles, tie tacks, bracelets, scripture totes ... their selection really is amazing. Check out their website here.

This booth was run by the S.A. Lifeline Foundation, which is committed to teaching others about the dangers of pornography and how to escape its snare. Steven Croshaw, who runs the foundation, shared with me that 90% of all college-age men are involved in pornography in some way. His wife, Rhyll Croshaw, has written a book about pornography from the wife's perspective, which will be released soon. You can learn more about the foundation here, and I will be doing a full-length feature about Steven and Rhyll in a few weeks here on the blog and I invite you to join us then.

I really had a fantastic day on Thursday at LDSBA. I'm excited about all the new products that are heading into the stores, and appreciate the workers at the booths for sharing their information with me. Be sure to check out their sites, and look for their products at your local LDS store.

Guest Blog: Diony George

How many of you really believe it’s the small things that matter most?

According to President Monson, quoted on the back of Diony George’s newest release, A Sisterhood of Strength, “it’s the service that counts.”

And service can be about small things:

Taking a bowl of homemade soup to a friend that’s ill or an unplanned visit to someone who’s feeling blue; doing the laundry for a new mom of twins, helping someone stranded in the rain. This are all seemingly small acts of kindness, however the impact is anything but.

Emotional connections between women—sisters—showing each other they care through acts of service.

“One person can make a difference. Each one of you has unique gifts. Use your gifts to serve others. As we walk in His light, we become women of vision, women of destiny, and women of eternal value…”—Mary Ellen Smoot

As part of Diony’s blog tour she is giving away some free copies of her book. For a chance to win your own free copy leave a comment on her blog about how service has touched your life. http://dionygeorge.com

Diony George is a wife, stay-at-home mom of seven, grandmother of two, a motivational speaker, and the author of three books. Through her writing and public speaking she loves helping others draw closer God. An avid reader whose favorite genre is romantic suspense, Diony also loves to travel, sew, and bake—especially pies and homemade bread. Born and raised in Alaska, she currently resides in Salt Lake City with her husband and family.

Cancer Kick-a-Thon

My dad passed away from cancer just over two years ago. This is a disease that affects every family in one way or another and touches every life.

I invite to you come to Memorial Park in Provo on Saturday, August 18th, to participate in a fun event and fundraiser.  I won't be able to attend myself, but several of my good friends will be there, and I believe strongly in this cause. Please click this link, get all the details, and tell all your friends and family.

Guest Blog by JoAnna Oblander - My Quest

I was recently contacted by new Cedar Fort author JoAnna Oblander about her new novel, A Glimpse of Heaven. Here are her thoughts about her book and her journey.

My Quest by JoAnna Oblander

If you have read my book A Glimpse of Heaven, you know that my life has been blessed by a near death experience. I italicized near death because it wasn’t a typical near death experience – if there really is such a thing.

Prior to that experience, as a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I believed the truths that I had been taught since childhood. My heart told me those truths were true and I made it a practice to live those truths each day to the best of my ability.

That has changed now – I am now on a Quest.

As I was taken back to the pre-existence and shown who I was there and the mission that I was asked to accomplish throughout my life on earth a change occurred – in me and in my understanding of life.

You might think that having seen it all – I would have all the answers and rest would be a cinch.

Well, much of what I saw there was blocked from my memory as I once again resumed residence in my mortal body.  I’m basically positive those memories were blocked so that my time of testing here could be construed as a valid test but the feelings I experienced have remained and what I have been allowed to remember are enough - enough to keep me valiant in my Quest.

There are two main things that I know are a part of my life mission:

1.       To help Heavenly Father’s children know Him, have a desire within their hearts to know Him better and to consistently seek a strong relationship with Him.

2.       To help Heavenly Father’s children know who they truly are, their worth, and their divine potential.

There are other things that I am to accomplish with my life – like family things and personal things but those are my main responsibilities outside of personal responsibilities.

We are meant to understand so much more than we do. For example, when we search our scriptures (not just read, but search) we should be using the Spirit to find and understand the hidden truths which are contained there. Did you know that the Book of Mormon teaches about the two basic components that everything is made of? Do you know what those two things are? (You ace this little side test if you do!)

Every single one of us is meant to be on a quest. And not just to know the scriptures or to be a good missionary or to be of service. We need to know in our hearts who we were before this life, we need to know our own personal mission(s) and to believe in who we are meant to become!
Most of all…we need to believe that we are capable of becoming who we were and who we are meant to become.

I can tell you that when I was shown who I was in the pre-existence – I was amazed, enthralled, and exhilarated by the me I saw there. I felt the same way about each of the spirits that I saw there (you). I was blessed to know and understand that I was who I was because of the strengths and passions that were uniquely mine. I also understood that those strengths and passions were maximized because of my love, devotion, and desire to utilize all the assistance that Heavenly Father had to offer me.

Every day, I wake up and my quest starts anew. I am always excited about what the day might bring. Nonetheless, I am not infrequently overwhelmed with the tasks in front of me and the lacking skill set that I currently possess. However, though I am always in need of answers I don’t have and skills that need to be developed – I know that whatever I need will come and I know that when I allow Heavenly Father to guide the process, it will come in the right way and at the right time.

There was once a time when I would have said, “Why me and not ____________ (insert name of more capable person)?” I don’t know the whys of that question. I just know that by small things great things are accomplished. I know that each of us is a small thing capable of doing great things when we push aside our personal unbelief in ourselves.

I hope you will join me on my quest. I hope you will help me get my book into the hands of millions of people who need to know how much our Heavenly Father loves them, how special they are, and the great potential they have. I hope you will seek to know who you uniquely are and the special mission that you are to accomplish and I hope that you will always feel in your heart the great love that our Heavenly Father has for you! I hope that you will believe in yourself and in the value of what you have to offer to the world around you! I already know that Heavenly Father believes in you and your potential – we are meant to succeed and to do amazing things!

With Smiles and Hugs!
